Wild Card Play-In Recap

Wally Keeps Mashing

It certainly came down to the wire… a Wild-Card Play-In game for the ages between Perth Platypi and Wally Mash. Both teams had consistently been atop the Points Scored Totals week in and week out late in the season, and sure enough, they put up the 2nd and 3rd highest point totals in Week 20. But with only one able to see another round in the Playoffs, the final score and outcome became dependent on Sunday Night Baseball. Coming into the late-night game, Wally Mash needed Marcell Ozuna to outscore the Atlanta Braves’ starting pitcher, Jared Shuster, by at least seven points. A narrow chance to say the least before the Braves started playing, especially given HumBabe’s pitcher-favored points structure. But one Marcell Ozuna homerun later plus a tally in Shuster’s Loss column did exactly what it needed to – gave Wally the victory. Perth had an unbelievable season – headlined by the performances of Christian Yelich and Nico Hoerner – but ultimately, it comes up short in the 2023 Season. Wally Mash now takes on the Orlando Splitters as the field dwindles to eight teams. Meanwhile, Brooklyn and LeBronto square off in the other half of the Shot Call League bracket.

Stros Keep Smashing

The Super Smash Stros’ laid claim to the second Wild-Card Play-In game, taking down the Golden City Gatekeepers. The Gatekeepers finish the year with a 10-10 record and the 9th most Points Scored in the League. Matt Olson led the way with his 43 homeruns and 736 Fantasy Points, but talented youth in the form of Spencer Steer and Jesus Luzardo give this team a solid start to the 2024 campaign. The Wild Card victor on the other hand, collected 43.5 points from DJ LeMahieu and Alex Verdugo apiece. The Stros’ now match-up against Jackal Attack – a team that scored 29 less points than the Super Smash Stros’ in Week 20. Could this Wild-Card underdog be catching the Basket Catch League’s top seed in a moment of weakness, demoralized at the loss of Shoehi Ohtani the pitcher, perhaps? Or was Jackal merely resting during their down week, preparing for a run to Postseason glory? We shall see…
